G.F.Haendel (1685-1759)

G.F.Haendel (1685-1759)

Judas Maccabaeus (HWV 63),  is an Oratorio composed by G.F. Haendel in 1746, with a libretto by Thomas Morell, the oratorio epitomizes the victory of Prince William Augustus, the Duke of Cumberland, at the battle of Culloden, the final confrontation of the jacobite rising. In the period 170-160 BC Judea was ruled by the Seleucid Empire, and the jews hat do fight to prevent their religion to be destroyed. Again, the title role is played by a Tenor, while the part of the Israelite woman was taken by the Mezzo-Soprano Caterina Galli.
